Measure Your Backset

Backset is the distance from the edge of the door to the center of the face bore (the large hole in the face of the door). Standard backset dimensions are either 2-3/8" (60mm) or 2-3/4" (70mm). To determine the backset you need to measure the distance from the edge of the door to the center of the hole.

If a lock is installed with a round trim plate it is easy to measure to the center of the hole with the lock still on. Just measure across from the edge of the door with your measuring tape placed just above the trim plate. The center of the plate is the point that the measuring tape and the trim plate touch.

Important: some doors have a bevelled edge so take your backset measurement from both sides of the door and compare them. The larger dimension is your actual backset.
